The Great Bible School Battle

Every Sunday morning there is a great battle of titans in our spiritual ring. In this corner, wearing a suit & tie and carrying a copy of God’s word is the preacher heralding the message “Please come to Bible class. It is important for you!” In the opposite corner, wearing pajamas and holding a copy of the T.V. Guide is a church member who is shouting the message “Why should I be there? It is not important; is it?” Week by week and round by round, the preacher takes low blows, shots to the head, and cheap shots that are causing him to lose this fight!

Although this illustration is humorous, it is not a laughing matter when one considers the insignificance that some people give to Bible school and the study of the Bible. It is astonishing that the Bible is the best selling book of all time, yet so many people do not understand it, or those who claim to understand it severely misquote and interpret it.

If I were to give a survey to ministers on what area the church needs to improve in most, I am sure that congregational and personal Bible study would be in the top 10 list for every one of them. I think it is time for us as Christians to start taking Bible study more seriously and do our part to make sure we are students of the Word.

Let’s look at the Bible and see what it says about Bible study and how we can apply it in our personal life.

In the first and second book of Timothy, we find two general passages that deal with Bible study. In 1 Timothy 4:13 we find “give attention to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation and teaching.” Why did Paul think that studying was necessary? There was apostasy going on in the church. There were individuals who were teaching false doctrines at this time. Paul knew if they did not study the Scriptures then those Christians could be confused by this false teaching. The same thing is happening in today’s church and Paul’s message is still true; BIBLE STUDY IS IMPORTANT.

Also we find that in 2 Timothy 2:15 “study to show yourself approved unto God….rightly dividing the word of truth.” We see here that those who study are accounted as acceptable before God. When ministers try to make the point that BIBLE STUDY IS IMPORTANT, it is not for their personal benefit it is for yours. This scripture also tells us that by studying we will be able to “rightly divide the scriptures.” This gives us confidence that we can deliver the gospel of Christ without error. If our concentration was put on Bible study, there would be fewer church splits, arguments, and disagreements over the interpretation of the Scriptures. Yes my friend BIBLE STUDY IS IMPORTANT.

We must make it our top priority and goal to study the Bible more. It should be our prayer that we continue to grow in the knowledge and wisdom which the Bible offers us. If we are successful the church will grow, the Lord will be glorified, and we will be a more knowledgeable people.

Let us stop fighting the preacher; read our Bibles and be present when the church offers Bible class because…………….BIBLE STUDY IS IMPORTANT!

(I’m finished preaching now)
